‘In Memoria Aeterna’ Concert (03/23/24)
After centuries of oblivion, the music composed in Valencia Cathedral is being sung again at the Palau de la Música on 23 March 2024
For centuries, the Metropolitan Cathedral of Valencia has been the institution that has maintained a stable musical activity of the highest level and prestige throughout the old Kingdom of Valencia. Only a handful of similar centres competed for supremacy on the Iberian Peninsula. As was customary in these institutions, the Valencian cathedral trained musicians from childhood and there was an intense musical activity in the religious services. This activity was carried out by the Musical Chapel, a group made up of professional musicians employed by the Chapter and children in training.
In the present programme, Victoria Musicae offers a sample of the musical production of some of the musicians – kapellmeister, organists or singers – who served the Cathedral’s musical chapel during the golden age of polyphony in the classical style, from the end of the 15th century to the first decades of the 17th century. In the case of some of these musicians, the selection includes their only surviving works. In addition, some of the works on the programme will be performed for the first time in this concert, having been rescued from centuries of oblivion.
